Touring has always been a loss leader in the music business. The heft of earnings to this day is sales. Streaming is barely a blip on the earnings radar. As you point out, the real ROI in streaming is awareness. But building awareness without following up with product sales is not a viable business model. Fans understand this. Swift sold over a million albums last week. But generally 99% of music artists see no awareness or sales in the streaming era. Platforms like Bandcamp are much better at promoting awareness and sales it’s hard for me to quantify how Spotify has contributed to the music industry. The entire industry was functioning much better before the platform launched. When revenue is published the number looks impressive, but that number mainly goes to labels, not artist.
