Do we even need a president?

I think 21st century America actually needs a mayor.

In case you haven’t noticed, the world changed.

Smartphones, global connectivity, digital super-highways, better food production, better technology, innovation, medicine, less war, better science.

We worked hard to get here, from planting seeds in ancient Mesopotamia to seeding DNA to fight flaws in the human genome. A world without hunger and poverty is within our reach.

But such a world remains beyond our desire because our most ancient trait still beats with a mighty heart — the desire for power.

I suppose it never goes away. It might even be argued our ambitions are what fuels the innovations that got us here.

But what if ambition is focused not on progress but stasis? What if power only serves power?

In America, we’ve agitated our way into a box canyon. Billions are spent acquiring power but without any declaration of how this acquired power will be used. It brings into question the entire process, but also the design. If the only point of a presidency is the presidency what is the point of a presidency? The snake eats its tale.

A Mayor is judged on garbage men. If the streets are filled with trash the mayor’s performance is…
