American Future

In my city, we live into the future every day.

I live in New York City. I was born here. I’m a 4th generation New Yorker. The city is in my blood.

This is a city of immigrants. Trump threatens us with immigrants and I say send them here. We could use hard workers. The city needs help. We’ll put them to work. Just like generations of immigrants before them.

People on the extreme right wing attack us. They call us coastal elite. I say back to them, get on the ‘A’ at 7:30 on a weekday morning before you call us elite. Hang out on a street corner. Eat pizza. Elite in New York deals with the same crap the rest of us do. New York ain’t a gated community.

My neighbors are Muslim. And Puerto Rican. And black, yellow, pink and purple. My neighbors are straight, gay, trans, old, young, poor, rich. And that’s just in my building. My neighborhood is even more diverse.

Extreme right wing politics is living in a fantasyland. You can’t hold back the future. It will eat you if you try. You can’t build a nation on foundation of lies. Extreme politics will tumble into the swamp it crawled out of. Why am I so sure of this?

Because I live in New York. These streets aren’t elite. They’re real. If you don’t believe that come hang out. Wear your red hat. See how you do.

We’ve got every type here. Including red hats. But be ready for a little feedback. And after you’ve walked around and taken it all in we think you’ll see what we see every day. The future. What the real America looks like.
